Christmas Safety Measures to Have a Secure Home This Festive Period

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but also the peak time for home burglaries. Whilst many of us will be enjoying time with family and friends, there will be the odd few who will attempt to make the time a little less merry by breaking into homes. Luckily for you, the team at Umbrella Security have come up with our top Christmas safety measures to keep your home secure this festive period.

Keep Presents and Valuables Safe

Christmas is a time of giving and many presents will be received and exchanged, some more expensive than others. Our first Christmas safety measure is to keep these gifts safe from burglars. Do your best to keep them out of sight from any potential thieves; if your tree is in full view from a window, maybe save putting presents under the tree until Christmas morning. In addition to this, after exchanging gifts, don’t put any packaging outside in view to burglars, as you’re making your home a lot more attractive by promoting all of the expensive new things inside.

Lock Doors and Windows

This goes without saying and is one of the safety measures we promote throughout the whole year, but remember to lock your doors and windows! Forgetting to do this creates very easy access for burglars, making your home the prime location to break into. Also, hide the keys to your doors and windows so that they’re not in sight.

Security Systems

A great way to prevent burglaries is to make your home less attractive to thieves; the best way to do this is to get security systems installed, especially visual ones. Getting CCTV systems, alarms or security lighting will put off potential burglars as it’s a lot easier for them to get caught. Security lighting and alarms will instantly alert you, or your neighbours if you’re out, that there is an intruder, giving you time to call the police.

Stay Safe on Social Media

Our final Christmas safety measure is to stay safe on social media. Social media is continuously becoming a huge party of everyday life and is also becoming a tool for thieves to find out perfect timings for them to break in. Don’t advertise your Christmas plans all over social media as you will be promoting the times where you will not be at home, making it an easy target for thieves.
