If you listen to the news, you’ve probably heard plenty about London’s growing crime violent problem. The rise of violent crime in London has been an ongoing problem for many years now, but 2018 saw an even larger upturn in its reporting.

Whether or not that came about more as a result of the media than any real increase in violence is unclear, but the perception is certainly that violent crime has increased.

The statistics

You only need to look at BBC News to see just how frequent violent crimes are becoming in London. An increase is also apparent when you examine the Metropolitan Police’s data.

Add into the equation the fact that London’s homicide rates are at a ten-year high, and the clear rise in violent crime overall from Statista, and it seems that the data supports the media’s reporting.

Sadiq Khan

London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, has come in for some criticism over the past 12 months. His critics have, although not exclusively, used the capital’s crime rate as a key piece of evidence to support their arguments.

He has often been blamed for the increase in violent crime, with people pointing to and criticising the mayor’s inactivity for many of the city’s problems.

Countermeasures

Unfortunately, London has a rich history of violent crime, and it’s one that doesn’t show any real signs of slowing down.
